Memoirs of a Hayseed Physicist by Peter Martel

Part 6:
In The Beginning:
Arichat was a seaside town and the school was near the harbour. During the winter we often scampered down to the harbour to play one of three games. In the dead of winter, the most popular game consisted of running across a recently frozen track left by the packet steamer that made daily trips to ferry in supplies. This ice was little more than an inch thick and it would bend as we slipped across it, because salt water ice is not brittle, but resilient.
