A week of events in Quebec is aimed at reducing the amount food we throw out
At a recent roundtable hosted by the Guardian, experts from industry, research and academia discussed how to make the food system more sustainable. Here are 10 things we learned
Around the world food waste occurs at every step of the food chain. Globally, about 24% of food calories produced for people get wasted on the journey from farm to plate, and in the U.S. that percentage is even higher. But how that happens is very different depending on where you live, as this chart from the World Resources Institute shows:

Did you know that this past Thursday, October 16, was World Food Day? Yeah, I missed it, too… And while this may strike you as just another opportunity for people to share pictures of their meals, and promote their particular food ideology, the main idea behind it involves global food issues. This year’s theme, for instance, was “Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth.”
Artificial light has transformed how the human race has lived in the past 100 years or so. It’s estimated that between 1950 and 2000, exposure to artificial light in the UK rose four-fold. Even for those not working night shifts, it can be almost impossible to avoid the night-time glare from street lamps, car lights, TVs, computers and smartphones.
