TORONTO – A pine tree planted in Los Angeles in memory of The Beatles guitarist George Harrison has died as a result of — wait for it — a beetle infestation.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the sapling was planted in 2004 with a small plaque at the base of it, in the city’s Griffith Park because the former Beatle spent his final days in the city and was an avid gardener.
A local councilman told the Times the tree was more than 10-feet tall but the beetle infestation was too great for the pine.
The councilman said the tree will be replaced but no timeframe was set.
According to the newspaper, Harrison would have enjoyed the irony in the death of the memorial tree.
Harrison died in 2001. He was 58.
